Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a fine-leafed perennial plant belonging to the family Liliaceae, along with other aromatic plants such as oregano, basil, and thyme.
Rosemary was cultivated by the Spaniards in the 13th century, where it became a popular spice for salted meats from the 15th to the 18th century. In fact, I suspect it was used less as a spice and more to mask the less-than-pleasant smell and taste of rotting meat.
Rosemary is associated with remembrance. Its earliest use was probably by Greek students. They braided wreaths of the fragrant herb in their hair, whence Rosemary's other common name, "herb of the crown", comes from. This is something I do whenever I trim my rosemary - stick the herb into my sweaty, dirty hair. I can't remember if it helps my memory or not, but it definitely improves my sense of smell.
Rosemary also symbolizes fidelity or, more romantically, love. During the Middle Ages, brides wore henna on their heads and the groom and guests also wore rosemary. Those attending a rich wedding may receive a gold-encrusted rosemary branch. Newly married couples would plant henna plants on their wedding day in the hope that it would be a good omen for their future. It was said that if a person patted another person with an open rosemary sprig, they would fall in love.
Rosemary essential oil is primarily extracted through steam distillation, which is a process that uses steam to extract the volatile compounds from plant material. Here’s a breakdown of how rosemary essential oil is typically extracted:
Steam distillation is the most common and efficient method for extracting essential oils from aromatic plants like rosemary. It allows for the preservation of the oil’s natural properties and ensures a high-quality end product.
